D.Billy: Street Interventions

July 8th, 2008 by Jeff Simmermon

You may have noticed D.Billy’s name on a number of posts over the past few months. He’s not only a friend of mine, but a pretty awesome artist.

From the artist’s statement on his website:

Using colorful media such as twisting balloons, party streamers, and artist tape, I have begun to add visual representations of sound effects to public spaces as a sort of dimensional graffiti. After embellishing the found scenes and photographing the results, I leave my additions in place to engage passers-by for as long as the materials hold up. For me, this process encourages a reexamination of surroundings and objects that are usually taken for granted, and injects a hint of the fantastical surreality that I have established in my other work.

Or, at the very least, I hope someone thinks these things are kind of funny.

Here’s some of his work:

Clown Graffiti

Crackle

More after the jump …

Rrring

Fooosh

Narnia

Very nice! The water for instance is impressive. Not that it looks real per say, just very well crafted.

    Cheers!

I really like these images. I love the combination of urban photography, with the cartoony additions. It is great how he makes the picture his own, by adding his touch of color, and it changes the mood of the pictures entirely.

Caution! Unpopular Social Commentary Ahead: I hate to be such a party pooper, and I also acknowledge that the urban environment needs more vibrancy and color, but…do you know where this non-biodegradable plastic graffiti is going to go once it decays in the sun and blows away in the wind?

It’s funny you should mention that. This is actually on the back wall of an endangered sea turtle sanctuary.

    I kid.

But it is in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, the biggest toxic waste dump in the US. Look it up. A few balloons are just adding color at this point. The whole area’s totalled, environmentally.

I LOVE it!!! Pure realized original thought!!! I remember visiting NYC when I was around 12 years of age (on a family vaca up from Texas) and after seeing the graffiti on the trains and subways, but rather than become offended, the work struck me as pure art. It was an expression of talent rooted in a very different socio-economic environment than from where I traveled. I happily looked upon the colorful and geometric “tags” as adornment in an otherwise drap and depressed place . . .and this is what this delightful artist has done. Why can’t there be more people like this in the world? And why can’t more people appreciate them?

That is amazing. Please come set up Philadelphia with some of this… we need some uplifting messages on the walls around here.

3dleo, I am excited to tell you that I believe the balloons used in these pictures are 100% biodegradable and will degrade at the same rate as an oak leaf. I appreciate your concern about the environment and thought you would like this information.

Lovely colors. Love the NARNIA shot.

And finding out that the balloons are bio-degradable makes it less destructive than if it weren’t.
